Nostalgia CD recording
February 14, 2018 - February 16, 2018
“Have you ever wondered how nostalgia isn’t what it used to be?” ― Jasper Fforde
Nostalgia is Boho Strings’ first studio recording project, entirely dedicated to the music of Belgian composer Wim Henderickx. Although Wim Henderickx’ music has been extensively recorded, this does not include any of his works for string orchestra. When David Ramael, artistic director of Boho Strings, approached Wim about the idea of recording these works, the composer immediately responded with great enthusiasm, as both musicians realized they shared their eclectic and adventurous approach to music making. Joining Boho Strings and David Ramael will be three virtuoso soloists of international renown: flutist Valerie Debaele, marimba player Lin Chin Cheng, and clarinetist Roeland Hendrikx.
One can dwell on the past, and long for something that was. One can look towards the future, and try to belong to something that is becoming. It is in human nature to long for the ability to create an established surrounding, therefore, we reflect on our past and look towards our future…nostalgia.
Nostalgia permeates this entire recording, from the album’s title work, to the reflective character of In Deep Silence III, looking back at Joseph Haydn’s Kaiser Quartet, to the dream state of Makyo. At once nostalgic for the past, creating a vision for the future, Nostalgia is a meditation on history and space. Not only does it represent a cross section of Wim Henderickx’ entire output, with early works such as the 2 Nocturnes and the Four Pieces, with influences of Japanese music in Makyo and a complete reworking of the Middle Eastern influences in Nostalgia, the inner dialogue of the works on this album also dwell on the ambivalences of human longing and belonging and do not shy away from the contradictions of modernity.
Nostalgia will be recorded in the Blauwe Zaal at DeSingel from February 14 – 16, 2018.
